2021 could be the year Apple fixes everything and changes its image

2021 could be the year Apple fixes everything and changes its image

For all the great and revolutionary products and features Apple has released over the years, there are just as many head-scratching decisions that have taken away or ruined things we love. They’re usually gone forever, like USB-A ports or headphone jacks, but every so often Apple hears our wails and reverses course. It happened most recently with the butterfly keyboard. Way back in 2015, Apple shifted away from its very excellent scissor-switch keyboards to a proprietary “butterfly” model that was thinner than its predecessor. Apple claimed it was superior, but unhappy users loudly complained about the keyboard, which was so prone to sticking and unresponsive keys that Apple launched a service program extending to every butterfly MacBook ever made. Apple finally retired the butterfly keyboard once and for all in 2019, and…

Jodie Turner-Smith: The Rising Queen of Film & Fashion

Like many first-time action stars, Jodie Turner-Smith learned a lot about her physical abilities while filming her role as a Navy SEAL opposite Michael B. Jordan in Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse, available this month on Amazon Prime Video. But beyond any preproduction boot camps or intricately choreographed combat sequences, Turner-Smith’s preparation for the role came with an additional challenge: At the time, she was pregnant and in her second trimester. “There were moments I thought I was in over my head,” says the 34-year-old actress, who, along with her husband, actor Joshua Jackson, 42, welcomed daughter Janie last April. “I’m excited to eventually tell her, ‘I was pregnant with you when I did that!’” Turner-Smith never imagined herself in such physically demanding roles—or any other movie roles, for that matter. Born…

PEACOCK | Girls5eva This new sitcom oughta be, gotta be a hit! COMEDY Girls5eva arrives like a gift—a present, a surprise, not just something you ordered from Amazon out of necessity or boredom while you’ve been keeping to the house. With Tina Fey as one of its executive producers, it’s very much in line with NBC’s 30 Rock and Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The ridiculous, teasingly sarcastic one-liners never let up: They land with the light, firm ping of raindrops on an umbrella. This makes for a happy experience. Girls5eva, we learn at the start, were a five-member pop group—as they sang in their signature anthem “Gonna be famous 5eva, ’cause 4eva’s too short.” They enjoyed painfully limited success with a string of stupendously inane songs (another typical lyric: “We’re dream girlfriends ’cause…

Surviving Marilyn Manson: ‘I Thought He Was Going to Kill Me’

When Ashley Morgan Smithline first began conversing with Marilyn Manson in July 2010, she thought he was the perfect man. “All we talked about was our favorite movies and our favorite books. We knew the same lines from the same movies,” says the California-born model, who was introduced to the singer (real name: Brian Hugh Warner) by a mutual contact, photographer Tyler Shields. Then working in Bangkok, Smithline says her relationship with the L.A.-based Manson, known for heavy metal with shocking lyrics, grew from emails into hours-long phone conversations. Over several months, “he lured me in with this endless intelligence,” says Smithline, 36, who thought she had found a sensitive soul underneath his ghoulish persona. “It felt very safe and secure.” But soon a monster emerged, according to Smithline, who says their…

AMAZON | the Underground Railroad An extraordinary journey DRAMA In this adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer-winning novel by Moonlight director Barry Jenkins, the Underground Railroad is an actual train, chugging along beneath the surface of the earth on an unpredictable path—it’s not clear how all the rails are connected, why at some points Blacks making their way to freedom enter at a gleaming station and at other points exit through a hole in the ground. While never stinting on the historic horrors of slavery, this remarkable 10-hour epic unfolds like a dream—a nightmare that keeps reinventing itself beyond the dreamer’s control. Cora (Thuso Mbedu), a runaway slave from Georgia being pursued by an unstoppable slave hunter (Joel Edgerton), repeatedly embarks and disembarks, expecting liberty but instead encountering racism reconfigured for a new setting.…

Meghan & Harry’s Baby Joy! An American Royal Baby

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, departed the United Kingdom more than a year ago to start a new life in California, but they have always said they were just stepping back from their roles as working royals rather than leaving the royal family itself. And when they announced the June 4 birth of their daughter, the baby girl’s name—Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor—spoke volumes. A tribute to both Harry’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth, 95—whose childhood nickname was Lilibet (pronounced “LIL-eh-bet”)—and Harry’s beloved mother, Princess Diana, the name reflected the close ties Harry feels with the two women who have made the strongest mark in modern royal history. “She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the…

The Professor & the Innocent Man: A Friendship Forged in Hope

For Willie “Timmy” Donald, Feb. 27, 1992, was just an ordinary Thursday. Then 23, he spent a carefree afternoon with his older sister and her fiancé, tagging along as they went car shopping at multiple dealerships in the suburbs around their Gary, Ind., hometown. Meanwhile in Gary, a robbery spree was underway. A man with a gun was attacking six different families in their homes, demanding cash and fatally shooting one of his victims when he tried to resist. The attacks occurred in Donald’s neighborhood, but he didn’t even know they’d happened until five days later, when police appeared at his door. Two witnesses had selected Donald’s photo—erroneously in the system after he was a passenger in a car mistakenly reported stolen—and then identified him as the gunman in a lineup. Though…

We were sent home, lives changed, with a diagnosis and a big bottle of medicine to give Finn, four times daily; the first day of a lifetime of medication. A diagnosis of a chronic illness seemed so unfair, like a life sentence for our little boy. Would he always need medicine? What if the medicines didn’t work? Would he need surgery? 'I Want to Demystify Suicide'

For five hours, maybe six, on a Friday afternoon in April 2006, Donald Antrim paced the rooftop of his four-story Brooklyn apartment building, doing battle with death. Over and over again, as New Yorkers on nearby roof decks enjoyed afterwork cocktails, the acclaimed novelist—who had lived for years with what he calls suicidal illness—ventured onto the roof’s ledge. “I was in my socks, no shoes, leaning out and keeping one foot on the fire escape and one hand, and then letting go and catching and letting go and catching,” Antrim recalls. Thinking back, he wonders what his neighbors might have thought, if they had noticed the man struggling on the roof: “Would they have understood he was about to die? Or would they have imagined that he was trying to…

Philip’s carriage sat nearby, his driving gloves and a small red pot—containing sugar lumps for his beloved Fell ponies—situated poignantly atop the seat. Just before 3 p.m., as a custom Land Rover hearse carried Philip’s flag-draped casket toward St. George’s Chapel, several members of the royal family took their places in a solemn procession behind, including sons Charles, Andrew and Edward and daughter Anne. They Almost Got Away With Murder: Killer Sisters

Every evening after watching Wheel of Fortune, he went to the nearby beach to catch the sunset. Returning home, he would read his prayer cards, in Italian and English. And before bed he would drink his favorite cocktail, a vodka and Diet Coke. But in the weeks after his live-in girlfriend had died, the widowed man’s two daughters, Mary Beth Tomaselli, 65, and Linda Roberts, 64, said he often seemed confused and forgetful and urged him to move into assisted living. He wanted to stay put. Their arguments became moot when Linda, a doctor’s office receptionist, called 911 on the morning of March 6, 2015, and told the operator that…

One of the few women to break into the boys’ club of late-night TV talk shows, the comedian and bestselling author made a brand out of unabashedly doling out her at times polarizing opinions on every subject from politics to sex. Sometimes she “had no idea how I was coming across,” she says. “Everyone’s multifaceted, and I assumed everyone saw all those sides of me.” Determined to figure out her own psyche, a few years ago Handler began going to therapy several times a week to explore her own past, eventually coming to terms with how she was shaped by the grief she felt following her oldest brother’s death when she was 9. Becoming more “self-aware” was key:…

In a viral TikTok video, model Sumner Stroh, 23, claimed she had a yearlong affair with Levine, 43, and shared screenshots of apparent Instagram messages from the musician, including a note in which he asked how she would feel if he were to name his new baby Sumner. “At the time, I was young, I was naive, and, quite frankly, I feel exploited,” said Stroh, who told the New York Post’s Page Six they had a…

They Called Her ‘Gone Girl’

Some days the joy of watching their 14-month-old daughter Olivia discover the brilliant colors in a blossoming flower or notice the trilling of a nearby bird nearly overwhelms parents Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn, enveloping them in what Denise calls “our happy little bubble.” Other days something as mundane as seeing a security-surveillance camera can trigger panic, giving them an unwelcome feeling of being watched. And they both know that one day they will have to tell their daughter the shocking story of what happened to her parents before she was born: how they were attacked and terrorized in a bizarre kidnapping plot—then accused by authorities of making it all up. “When I was kidnapped, I didn’t know if I was going to live to see another day,” remembers Denise.…

Naya Rivera’s Dad: ‘I Miss Her Every Day’

George Rivera was taking a break from remodeling his home in Knoxville, Tenn., on July 8 when his cell phone rang with a FaceTime call. His oldest daughter, Naya, was thousands of miles away, tooling around in a rented pontoon boat on a lake outside of Los Angeles with her 4-year-old son Josey and—as he says she did throughout her life—wanted her dad’s advice. His daughter, in sunglasses and a baseball cap, was happy and grinning beneath the boat’s canopy, and he took a screenshot. “She wanted to go swimming with Josey out in the middle of the lake,” recalls George, 64, an avid boater who worried when his daughter admitted that the boat had no anchor. “I could see that the wind was blowing, and my stomach was just cringing.…

Paul Rudd is the Sexiest Man Alive!

Paul Rudd is having a hard time acknowledging that he’s People’s 2021 Sexiest Man Alive. The actor, 52, has heard before how he’s not the stereotypical Hollywood leading man—he’s kind, self-deprecating, affable, hardworking, all labels he’s embraced to some degree. But sexy? That’s a little outside his wheelhouse. “I do have an awareness, enough to know that when people hear that I’d be picked for this, they would say, ‘What?’” says Rudd, sitting in a brownstone on a rainy day in New York City to discuss his coronation before jetting back to London for his next Marvel installment, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. “This is not false humility. There are so many people that should get this before me.” Such humble deflection—coupled with those gorgeous green eyes and easy grin—is exactly…

J.Lo & Ben: A Second Chance at Love!

Reboots and revivals are everywhere you look in Hollywood—but who could have guessed that the most talked-about love story of summer 2021 would be an emotional real-life sequel? Part 1: Back in 2004 Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez broke off their engagement after an intense relationship that played out in a swirl of diamonds, red carpets and tabloid headlines. Part 2: Older, wiser and still passionate about each other, the superstars have rekindled their romance—and they’re determined to make it last. “They want a future together. Jennifer never thought she’d end up with Ben, but she’s thrilled that she did,” says a Lopez source. The feeling is mutual for Affleck, who first sparked buzz about their renewed bond when he praised Lopez’s “extraordinary work ethic” and “humility” in her May…

Bernard Fisher reflections I enjoyed the article in the November/December 2021 FSM about Maj. Bernard Fisher’s aircraft (“Re-dress a famous Skyraider”). I had the privilege of serving with him in the 526th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, from 1967-68. As an enlisted man, I was lucky to be on the same squadron ski team during a competition for the 86th Air Division held in Kirchdorf, Austria. He was a gentleman through and through and insisted on us calling him Bernie — no formalities at all for a solid week. I also under-stand his son also served in the Air Force as a pilot. – Michael MegeeSurprise, Ariz. Ed.: Thanks for sharing your memories, Michael. Inside Shailene & Aaron’s Surprise Engagement

While making a virtual appearance during the NFL Honors broadcast on Feb. 6, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers stunned the audience when he dropped some unexpected information into his acceptance speech for the NFL MVP award. “2020 was definitely a crazy year filled with lots of change and growth,” the star athlete said before revealing the big news: “I got engaged.” Later, after thanking his team, Rodgers, 37, thanked “my fiancée” for her support. It was a surprising announcement from the man who hadn’t publicly stepped out with anyone since his relationship with former race-car driver Danica Patrick abruptly ended last June. Just days before the revelation, multiple sources confirmed that Rodgers had been quietly dating Big Little Lies actress Shailene Woodley, 29, since last summer, after she split…

Justice At Last

Justice At Last

Dressed in a black three-piece pinstriped suit and bowler hat and flanked by his attorneys, Anthony Broadwater sat inside a Syracuse courtroom this Nov. 22, nervously anticipating the decision of State Supreme Court Justice Gordon Cuffy. This was the fifth time in the past 40 years that Broadwater had waited to see if a judge would overturn his 1982 conviction for raping then-college freshman Alice Sebold, author of the bestselling novel The Lovely Bones. After dabbing the corners of his eyes with a handkerchief, the 61-year-old handyman began fidgeting with his pocket square, looking up at Cuffy as he began to speak. As soon as the judge uttered the word “granted,” Broadwater’s sobs almost drowned out the rest of the judge’s statement, though he didn’t really need to hear any…

Royal Family Divided: Turmoil at the Palace

For Prince William and Princess Kate, the morning of March 11 unfolded like so many days filled with royal engagements that had come before: thanking teachers at a public school in east London, cheering on children and launching the latest stage of Mentally Healthy Schools, one of Kate’s key initiatives. But the carefully organized event came to a dramatic halt when, for a few seconds, William stopped to address the subject that had been making headlines around the world: the interview his brother Prince Harry and sister-in-law Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, gave to Oprah Winfrey four days earlier. Echoing the most incendiary claim made by the couple, a reporter shouted at William, “Is the royal family a racist family, sir?” The future King—who rarely answers off-the-cuff questions, let alone…

HBO | the Princess How the Windsors, and the world, lost Diana DOCUMENTARY Timed to the 25th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, this fascinating but somber film—culled from archival footage, with no talking heads—is chiefly an examination of how the media shaped its narrative about and around her brief, glamorous, troubled life. The footage that rolls past, showcasing her marriage to and then breaking away from Charles, is mostly familiar (occasionally you think, “I remember that on The Crown”). But the images matter less than the story being voiced through the vintage off-camera commentary. It’s the tale we’ve accepted—the fairy-tale romance ascends like a fancy balloon, braided with silk, then sinks (love, not air, was needed to keep it aloft). Charles becomes jealous, Camilla looms into view, Diana grows disillusioned and wise. But what…

My Royal Friendship: How Prince Harry Inspired Me

When Dean Stott arrived for specialized military training one August day in 2007, he sensed something was different at the airfield in North Yorkshire, England. There seemed to be a greater number of vehicles around the base and more senior staff than usual. Stott soon learned why: Among their ranks was a young officer named Second Lieutenant Wales—aka Prince Harry. Like Stott, Harry, then 22, was undergoing training to be a forward air controller in the British Army, and when, at their first session, the royal raised his hand to ask if he would get a call sign, or code name, if he was successful in the course, Stott couldn’t resist a quip. “I sort of made a jokey comment, much to the dismay of the rest of the staff,”…

AMAZON | Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse Michael B. Jordan) early on in the 1993 novel Without Remorse. By the end of this Amazon film, Kelly has been through hell and back—and possibly back again, if you’re keeping score—and been rewarded by the CIA with a new name (John Clark, purposefully bland) and mission. He’s also been established as a player in the Clancy universe. Not worried yet not casual, no matter the severity of the storm—that’s the key to Kelly, and to Jordan’s performance, which is equal parts adrenaline, cool patience and brute force. The part has…

Forbidden from seeing his six children without his wife, Anna, present, banned from accessing the Internet and tracked around the clock by a GPS ankle monitor, Josh has been holed up on the 9-acre property since shortly after his April 29 arrest on charges of downloading hundreds of disturbing child sex abuse videos. The latest maneuverings by his lawyers—whose court filings weeks earlier were described by prosecutors as a “fishing expedition” for nonexistent evidence—were a shocking reminder of just how low the former reality TV star has sunk. “He really…

National guidelines recommend 150 minutes of moderateintensity exercise (like brisk walking) every week, but some research shows that even 60 to 90 minutes can make a difference in your health, says David Bassett, Ph.D., a professor in and head of the department of kinesiology, recreation, and sports studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Things walking can do for you: ▶ It may help you live longer. “Walking does a very good job of lowering the cardiovascular risk factors—cholesterol levels, blood pressure, excess fat—and prevents plaque buildup in arteries,” says Bassett. Plus, he notes, walking can improve insulin resistance. ▶ It keeps your brain sharp. “Walking has effects on the brain and increasing brain blood flow, so…

MY DAUGHTER, HER CANCER AND ME

On a warm summer’s day in 2018, I realised something was wrong. My daughters, Lara and Alexis, were playing outside in the paddling pool. I called to Alexis – a smiley one-year-old with wavy blonde hair, forever trailing after her three-year-old big sister – to put her sunhat back on. As she looked up at me, I noticed that her beautiful blue eyes were struggling to focus on my face. Pretending to play a silly game, I covered each eye in turn, and realised she couldn’t follow my finger with her right eye. A distant memory flickered in my mind; something I’d read mindlessly years before about a white glow where there should be a red eye in pictures. I quickly took a series of flash photographs and studied them with…

Why Am I So Distracted?

My moment of clarity came after a tumble down the stairs and an ankle fracture, in 2016. I’d been distracted—again. This time, I was looking at paint chips while walking down a flight of stairs in my house and thinking about what I’d just learned about light reflectance values. While laid up for six weeks of healing, I had plenty of time to consider what felt like my life’s failings. I had a master’s degree, but I’d made it through endless boring classes by daydreaming, doodling, and making lists of what I’d do next. My grades rarely dipped below A, but my only strategy was a combination of heavy caffeine usage, all-nighters, and make-up tests. Naturally, I’d sprained both ankles in college—after trying to read while going up a flight of…

The heart-wrenching horror played out in the hallways of Oxford High School on the afternoon of Tuesday, Nov. 30, with sickening familiarity. Crackling, echoing blasts and terrified screams, dozens of feet hitting the floor running, classroom doors slamming and students huddled together under desks in the dark, whispering to one another, crying on calls to parents and loved ones to say goodbye in case they were about to die. By 12:51 p.m., as dispatchers began fielding more than one hundred 911 calls, panicked students were climbing out of icy windows, trying to get away from the shots. Some students never made it out. Others were rescued, only later to succumb to their wounds, like senior Justin Shilling, 17. “Our hearts are broken,” his family wrote in a statement. “We would…

But despite her discomfort, she carried on as always. “What was striking is that not only was she indefatigably going about her duties as she would be expected to, but that she acknowledged that she couldn’t move,” says her biographer Sally Bedell Smith. “We’re so accustomed to seeing her…

Its central character, Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), runs a bodega but fantasizes about a life of tropical ease in the Dominican Republic. Benny (Corey Hawkins), a car dispatcher, wants nothing more than to…

(1949-2022) Ivana Trump: the Power and the Glamour

In the 1980s and ’90s, Ivana Trump was one of the most recognizable women in Manhattan and the nation, first as the wife of businessman Donald Trump—whom she memorably dubbed “the Donald”—and then on her own as a triumphant divorcée. At her apogee, she was described by gossip columnist Liz Smith as “a media goddess on par with Princess Di, Madonna and Elizabeth Taylor.” But lately Ivana had been fading. When she recently dined at Primola on New York City’s Upper East Side, “she didn’t seem in good shape,” owner Giuliano Zuliani tells People. “She could barely walk.” Her friend Zach Erdem, owner of the Hamptons restaurant 75 Main, says Ivana “was a tough lady” but had grown physically unsure of herself and alluded to hip troubles. “She was going to…

Jen: ‘I Lead with Love’

She may be one of the busiest women in Hollywood, but Jennifer Aniston will always drop whatever she is doing to watch the sunset at the end of each day. “It’s my favorite moment,” she says. “I wish we could freeze time in that magic hour because there’s a lot of taking it all in, the appreciation of the day and what’s happening.” The actress, 52, is especially grateful for her close-knit circle of friends of more than 30 years and her beloved dogs—schnauzer mix Clyde, pit-bull mix Sophie and newly rescued Great Pyrenees mix Lord Chesterfield—as well as her thriving career as a producer and actress. Her starring turn on the Apple TV+ drama The Morning Show, which she also executive-produces, won her an Emmy nomination and a Screen…

‘We Saw Him Do It’

On the snowy evening of Feb. 13, 1994, Quanita and Quentin Reeves, then 6 and 4, were sitting down for a dinner of SpaghettiOs at their cousin’s apartment in Bucyrus, Ohio, when they say their father’s friend Kevin Keith, 30, knocked on the door. “He asked for a glass of water,” recalls Quanita. “Then he told everybody to get the f--- on the ground.” As the siblings lay on the floor, shaking with fear, they saw Keith open fire, killing three family members, including their aunt Linda Chatman, 39. Quanita was shot twice in the stomach and once in the arm, and Quentin was hit in the stomach but survived. They spent months in the hospital recovering and years haunted by what they’d seen. “Years of counseling,” says Quanita. “Years…

FX Impeachment: American Crime Story Stars re-create one of the 20th century’s political earthquakes—which rocked the White House and nearly destroyed an intern named Monica DRAMA History hasn’t always been kind to Monica Lewinsky—in 1998 she was referred to by New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd as “a ditsy, predatory White House intern” as well as “the girl who was too tubby to be in the high school ‘in’ crowd”—but it’s finally starting to be kinder. Lewinsky, now 48, is one of the producers of this crackling new installment of Ryan Murphy’s American Crime series, which is informed by the perspective of the #MeToo era. Impeachment focuses on the women who were caught up in the destructive morass of the Clinton Administration, particularly what were referred to as “bimbo eruptions.” There’s Lewinsky, of…

King Charles’ Coronation: A Lifetime in the Making

King Charles’ Coronation: A Lifetime in the Making

Through a steady London rain on the morning of May 6, the pomp and ceremony of King Charles III’s coronation began with a ride in the Diamond Jubilee State coach. The carriage, first used in 2014 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the accession of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, departed from Buckingham Palace at 10:20 a.m. Escorted by more than 150 members of the British armed forces and cheered on by thousands of damp but decidedly enthusiastic well-wishers, the enclosed horse-drawn coach rolled its way to Westminster Abbey. For Charles, 74, accompanied by his wife of 18 years, Queen Camilla, 75, the ride followed a carefully charted course, winding past landmarks like Trafalgar Square, the Palace of Westminster and Big Ben. At only 1.4 miles, the King’s procession…

Lessons from Weight-Loss Pros

Weight-loss advice is constantly coming at you—whether you ask for it or not. You might hear about it via the latest wacky plan some influencer tweets out, a buzzy best-selling book, or your judgy sister-in-law who has been eyeballing your body at every family gathering since your brother first brought her home. There is certainly no shortage of tips on how best to slim down. The problem is, of course, that most of them are (low-fat) baloney and won’t result in long-term, lasting weight loss. Biologically speaking, losing and then keeping off weight is something your body is built to resist: A meta-analysis of 29 long-term studies on dieting showed that more than half the weight people lost had been regained at the two-year mark, and by five years, folks had…

The WORLD of COMETS

LITTLE MEANS MORE to me than comets. While in the sixth grade at Roslyn School in Montreal, I delivered the first of more than 2,500 lectures I’ve given in my life. The subject I chose for this first talk was comets, and it’s amazing to me to compare what we knew about comets then with what we know now. For example, all those years ago, we knew of a few hundred comets; now we know of at least 4,000. The most famous of all comets, Halley’s Comet, last rounded the Sun on Feb. 9, 1986. Twenty-one years before that, on Dec. 17, 1965, I began searching telescopically for comets. On Nov. 13, 1984, I discovered my first. I’ll never forget my view of a brand-new comet that no one else had…

FLAT CHANCE

FLAT CHANCE

When Kimberly Bowles faced a double mastectomy after months of chemotherapy and radiation for aggressive breast cancer in 2017, she decided not to have breast reconstruction. Kimberly, 36, a stay-at-home mom in Pittsburgh with a 1-year-old and a toddler, wanted to avoid more downtime—reconstruction would have meant multiple surgeries, keeping her out of commission for months longer. Kimberly was looking forward to getting through her mastectomy, which would help reduce the risk of her needing additional cancer treatment in the future, and returning to her routine. After doing research, Kimberly was adamant that she wanted a smooth, flat chest wall when her surgery was complete—now known as an “aesthetic flat closure”—and she even brought pictures to her surgeon to convey her expectations. But though she and her surgeon had discussed her…

KNOG SCOUT: A FIND MY TRACKER WITH A MOTION ALARM FOR YOUR BIKE

Using a Find My item has often involved a trade-off. Apple’s crowdsourced network of all its owners’ iPhones, iPads, and Macs (that haven’t opted out) provides robust tracking as long as somebody’s device is occasionally nearby. Many travelers discovered in the summer of 2022 that an Apple AirTag or third-party Find My item in their luggage meant the difference between a “lost” bag and being able to tell an airline where to find that bag. But the tradeoff is that makers of Find My items have to conform to an array of Apple’s rules and technology choices designed to balance tracking our stuff and the privacy and safety of others. For instance, Find My items that are away from the paired iPhone or iPad for between 8 and 24 hours will…

Elizabeth & Margaret: Inside Their Complex Bond

Elizabeth & Margaret: Inside Their Complex Bond

King George VI famously declared of his two beloved daughters—the dutiful firstborn Elizabeth, nicknamed Lilibet, and her free-spirited younger sister, Margaret—“Lilibet is my pride; Margaret is my joy.” The contrast between the sisters’ temperaments would only grow more pronounced as they assumed the roles prescribed for them since childhood: Elizabeth the future Queen and Margaret the backup. Yet despite their deep differences, the sisters were fiercely loyal to each other. “Margaret was someone who understood the Queen in a way no one else could,” says Andrew Morton, who examines the women’s unbreakable bond in his new book Elizabeth & Margaret: The Intimate World of the Windsor Sisters. “They knew each other intimately from the day they were born. There is a unique intimacy between two siblings brought up together, and…

oscar buzz! HBO MAX | Judas and the Black Messiah The FBI orchestrates an assassination DRAMA Directed by Shaka King, this terrific new film lays out its true-life story with bold, visceral confidence: In 1969, Black Panther leader Fred Hampton (Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya) was killed in a raid by Chicago police. They were acting on intelligence provided by one William O’Neal (Sorry to Bother You’s LaKeith Stanfield), who was both Hampton’s head of security and an informant for the FBI. One of the best movies of 2021 so far, Judas and the Black Messiah is a civil rights Passion Play, the story of a savior and a traitor—with key moves dictated behind the scenes by J. Edgar Hoover (Martin Sheen), giving orders to Agent Roy Mitchell (Jesse Plemons). Mitchell is O’Neal’s handler and…

Judge Judy: ‘I’m Having a Ball!’

Judy Sheindlin doesn’t mind waking up to a rainy day now, but 40 years ago a little precipitation always meant one thing: car trouble. “We had an old Maxima that didn’t start in the rain,” recalls Sheindlin of leaner times when she was working as a family court judge in New York City in the 1980s. “The wires would get wet, and I would have to go from our apartment to First Avenue, hail a cab and give the driver five dollars to come down the street to where I had parked the car and give it a boost.” For Sheindlin, the days of jump-starting finicky old sedans are now a distant memory. It’s been more than 25 years since the premiere of Judge Judy, the small-claims court series that introduced the…

Nathalie Vanderstay

At first Nathalie Vanderstay thought she was hearing firecrackers. Then came the screams rising above the music at the Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas, where she and her friends had been enjoying headliner Jason Aldean in a crowd of more than 20,000. Again: pop, pop, pop. “I’m seeing people drop in front of me,” she recalls. “I’m trying to cover my head, but I’m getting trampled on by boots and people trying to escape.” Flat on the ground, she glanced down and saw she’d been shot in the leg. As a licensed vocational nurse, she knew to grab her flannel shirt and tie a tourniquet. But as she finished, a bullet hit her stomach, and pain seared through her. In that moment, she says, “I realized, if I don’t…

The Oscars Incident Aftermath: What’s Next for Chris Rock

In the week after Chris Rock was slapped in the face by Will Smith onstage at the 2022 Oscars over a joke he made about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, Rock was in no rush to discuss the shocking incident. “I’m still processing what happened,” he said during the first of two sold-out stand-up comedy shows in Boston on March 30. “I’ll talk later, and it’ll be serious and everything.” Later he added, “Except for a couple weird things, life is pretty good right now.” During his initial shows, Rock, 57, refused to acknowledge hecklers who repeatedly yelled Smith’s name, until the following night in Boston when one audience member shouted “F--- Will Smith.” He immediately shut down the negativity, shaking his head and saying “No, no, no…” While Rock…

AMAZON | Being the Ricardos Nicole Kidman plays Lucille Ball, a funny lady in a serious mood COMEDY-DRAMA One of the greatest comic actresses in the history of TV, I Love Lucy star Lucille Ball earned her laughs—you could even say she drove a hard bargain. A minor success in movies, she wasn’t a natural charmer. Unlike Mary Tyler Moore, she couldn’t turn the world on with her smile. But she had a remarkable gift for physical comedy, and it became her powerful, crowning glory: She didn’t make comedy look easy—but she made it work. It’s this Lucy, too driven and preoccupied with being hilarious to waste much time actually smiling or laughing, whom Nicole Kidman plays extraordinarily well in writer-director Aaron Sorkin’s film. Kidman isn’t a particularly funny actress, either. You’re always…

Orphaned by COVID: ‘We Have to Stay Together’

It’s only 8:45 on a typically busy Thursday morning, and Jenny Burrows, 24, has already had a full day. She’s awakened younger sisters Zoe, 15, and Sierra Clarke, 12, thrown together a healthy fruit-and-yogurt breakfast, sat them down to actually eat it and then hustled the pair out the door of their Boynton Beach, Fla., apartment—with their assignments, homework and books in their backpacks—in time to catch their ride to school. She flops down on the sofa wearing the puppy dog slippers that once belonged to her mom, Cindy Dawkins—who died of COVID-19 at age 50 this past August—and grabs her cell phone for a remote video linkup to a judge in the Palm Beach County family court. “You’re willing to step up and take care of [Sierra and Zoe] until…
